Team Suzuki Ignis Super 1600 crews Nikolaus Schelle (Germany) and Juha Kangas (Finland) continued to impress throughout the second day of intense competition on the 70th Monte Carlo Rally on Saturday.

Schelle again underlined the competitiveness of the Suzuki Ignis, which is competing in its maiden Junior World Rally Championship event, to hold an impressive fifth position at the end of the day.

The German driver, who is co-driven by Gerhard Weiss, started the day determined to hold onto his position ¨ which will be worth a noteworthy two Junior World Rally Championship points if he can retain the place at the end of the rally on Sunday.

"It has been an unbelievable day of competition," said Schelle. "This is an incredibly demanding event, but the Suzuki Ignis has been standing up to the challenges exceptionally well. Tonight the final stage in the dark was extremely slippery so I decided to drive very carefully. With just four stages remaining tomorrow and the prospect of some points, I decided to take extra care to ensure we made it to the end."

Schelle's progress was slightly hampered by recurring brake problems at the rear of the car, but his mastery of the rally-prepared Ignis allowed him to stay on the road and set increasingly competitive times.

Finnish driver Kangas, who is co-driven by Mika Ovaskainen, also put in an encouraging performance to lie tenth overnight despite struggling to select gears for much of the day. He also dropped almost five minutes when he had to stop to change a punctured tyre early in the ninth stage.

"The puncture was very unfortunate, but otherwise it has been another positive day for us," said Kangas. "It was quite an effort to nurse the car back to service with the gear selection problems, but the team has done an exceptional job to keep the car in such good condition."

Commenting on another encouraging day for the Team Suzuki Ignis Super 1600 challengers, Nobuhiro Tajima, President of Suzuki Sport, noted that only 11 of the 27 starters remained, saying: "The competition is tough, but again the Ignis has proven its reliability in some of the toughest conditions there are in rallying."

The lead of the Junior World Rally Championship looked to be heading the way of Italian Gianluigi Galli (Fiat Punto), but the early leader made a mistake as darkness fell, sliding off the road and handing the advantage to Ford Puma driver Francois Duval.

The intense battle for Junior World Rally Championship honours begins again tomorrow (Sunday) at 07.33.
